Since 2006, Ms Shumin Chen has been working as a consultant with customers in various industries worldwide: aerospace & defence, banking, consumer products, healthcare, IT, medical, and fitness equipment. She has helped many companies with their documentation needs, based on standards where possible, and is widely regarded as a leading expert in ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English training, aviation documentation and multilingual documentation.
Ms Chen now heads the ASD-STE100 training arm of Shufrans TechDocs. In her current role, Ms Chen continues to focus on the practical implementation of international standards to facilitate the efficient creation and management of well-designed technical information and multilingual documentation. She received her professional on-the-job training in the field of STE under the tutelage of Dr Frans Wijma.
To add to a more diversified career experience, Ms Chen was briefly involved in the civil aviation training sector at the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. Ms Chen has been a business & collaboration development manager at the Singapore Aviation Academy, where she was responsible for the engagement of emerging training markets such as Brazil, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, India, Vietnam, and China through fellowship training programmes.
Ms Chen is fluent in English, Mandarin Chinese, German, and Polish. She has a background in Life Sciences and received her BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences from the National University of Singapore. When there is time to spare, Ms Chen very much enjoys her gong-fu tea brewing sessions and learning a new language. Ms. Chen is also a certified tea sommelier and the book editor of The Tea Sommelier: The Art of Selecting, Pairing, and Appreciating the World’s Finest Teas.
Dr Frans Wijma has a background in electrical engineering and linguistics. He was a documentation expert and private pilot who had been in the field of controlled language, multilingual documentation, and aerospace & defence standards for 15 years.
A well-known authority in the fields of controlled languages, aviation documentation and multilingual documentation, Frans provided training and consultancy services to customers worldwide. In addition, he was a regular speaker at language and industry events, fluent in 10 languages and a commercial pilot.
Over the years, Frans Wijma was responsible for the development and implementation of STE checker tools for compliance with ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English (Simplified Technical English, formerly AECMA Simplified English).
Frans Wijma was the project manager for many translation and development programs for customers worldwide, including Boeing, Embraer, Black & Decker, Rolls-Royce, and Fuji Heavy Industries. In 2001, Frans Wijma was presented with the prestigious Pride @ Boeing award in recognition of exceptional performance in supporting the development of the multilingual Longbow Apache IETM for Korea.
Together as an experienced global team, Shumin and Frans provided their combined knowledge and dedication to benefit customers.
